Our Story

My name is Molly, I am 11 years old, and I got the idea for Hats for Hope because I wanted to do something special to help my Aunt Robin when she was going thorough chemotherapy.

molly_henry.jpgMy mom has had a couple of friends who have had to have chemotherapy, and I wondered if my Aunt Robin would lose her hair like they did. My mom explained that she probably would, and that she would be really tired and would probably be sleeping a lot during her treatments.

I learned to make hats in my after school program, and thought it would be a great idea to make matching hats for Aunt Robin, and my cousin Lizzie to cheer them up.

When my mom was at Duke Medical Center with Aunt Robin, she told me that they have a basket of free hats for patients getting chemotherapy.

I asked if I could make more hats to donate to the free hat basket. My mom and dad said of course, and that maybe we should also make some hats and send them to Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York, and MD Anderson in Houston Texas, because their doctors helped my Aunt Robin too.

I decided that I wanted to try to make 100 hats and called the idea Hats for Hope.

Our hats are made from fleece so they are very soft and comfortable. They are perfect to wear for sleeping, but are also warm and cute enough to wear outside.

I hope other people like this idea and would like to make hats to help people getting chemotherapy. Check out the Spread the Hope information below if you would like to help.

Our family decided that we wanted to start by making 100 hats, but I realized that with homework and an 8:30 bedtime, it will take me weeks to make 100 hats.

Then I thought about how I could get others to help.

My parents suggested we post the directions to make the hats (it is very easy and you can do it without a sewing machine) and encourage other people to make hats to contribute to their own local hospitals.

Almost everyone knows someone who has cancer, and wants to do something to help. I think this is a great way to help people, and it is a great community service project for any group like scouts, school clubs, or church groups.

See the 'Making Hats' menu on the left for directions on how to make the hats. There's also cards to download to send with the hats, and hospital information with mailing addresses where you can mail your hats.
